Bacon had passed a day or two in Cairo in 1951 on the way back from South-Africa.The antiquities he saw there confirmed his belief that
Egyptian Art "was the highest form of visual expression ever achieved by man.

Bacon saw an exhibition of recent work by Picasso at Paul Rosenberg's gallery in Paris (July1927). He was struck by the way Picasso distorted the human figure while preserving its organic identity, a process he himself was to adopt in his own figurative work.
